Flexible Seating in the high school classroom |
I sometimes wonder if I was supposed to be an elementary teacher rather than a high school math teacher. I LOVE decorating my classroom with all the things. I love having my students color, draw, and make paper chains. I especially love all of the fun furniture elementary teachers have in their classrooms!
How my Flexible Seating Journey began...
It became a mission of mine back in 2016 to figure out a way to incorporate flexible seating in my high school math classroom.
I started doing all the research (Pinterest became my new BFF), but quickly realized that flexible seating was mostly done in elementary classrooms - it simply wasn't a thing for high school. I had to be more creative in my searching. When I found something "elementary" that I liked, I had to find a "big kid" alternative to make it appropriate for high schoolers.
After about a year of collecting ideas, I realized that I would need some money to make this all happen. I was fortunate enough that my district had an Education Foundation with which I could write a grant to help pay for the furniture!
I wrote my grant proposal in the fall of 2018, and was gifted $3,000 to make my dream a reality! I was so ecstatic and slowly began ordering furniture in the spring of 2019. I went into the 2019-2020 school year with SO MUCH excitement over buying the remaining furniture...and then we all know what happened...
My students and I were able to enjoy my amazing furniture for half a year before it all had to be packed up and student desks were moved in (6 feet apart).
Sad to move back to desks!! |
Thankfully a year and a half later, restrictions were lifted and my furniture was taken out of storage (ok, an extra office in our media center).
Flexible Seating in Storage |
I was in a new (HUGE) classroom and was able to take full advantage of my amazing furniture!!
Flexible Seating in my High School Math Classroom |
It is amazing to see how much my students enjoy the furniture I have. They love the flexibility of seat options, as well as the ability to stand, sit on the floor, and relax in a beanbag. I love hearing comments about how cozy my room is or how inviting it feels because of the furniture.
How Flexible Seating Works in My High School Classroom
Students still have assigned seats in my classroom, but they still have flexibility as to their chair and table.
I change seats at the start of each unit. Before changing seats, I ask students to rank their top 3 table choices (low, couch, regular, tall). From there, I try to give kids their first or second choice. I never want kids sitting in a seat they don't feel comfortable at.
If students pick the low table or the couch they sit in their normal place every day (until we change seats again). If they pick the regular height or the tall table, they get a little more flexibility each class period. When they come in, they are allowed to move chairs around. If they don't like the chair at their assigned spot, they can swap it for a chair they like better. The biggest rule is that they have to make an even swap - they cannot just take a new chair while leaving the old one at their table. This way, all tables always have 4 "chairs" at all times.
I have noticed that students tend to come to class on time, or even early (*gasp!) so they can get the chair they like. If they are the last one, they get what is left over. If they REALLY don't like what seat they have, the will sometimes convince a friend to swap, but most of the time they suck it up, and then come early next class 😂
Check out this YouTube video I created showing off how my furniture works.
Where My Flexible Seating Furniture Came From
I created a YouTube video talking about how I was able to afford everything in my classroom. Check it out below:
